I have a good friend who has a full-time job, but also has an established company that he works on a part-time basis. He has made some tremendous progress. He recently asked me, “how do I add my side business stuff to LinkedIn and still have it look professional?” I responded very quickly, “It’s not a side business…It’s a business, a legitimate one at that!” This should be listed on LinkedIn just as it is. You are a founder and CEO of a company, and you should be listing exactly what you do with this company on a daily basis. This really made me think deeper on professional level. How many of us undervalue what we do and who we are? Many may struggle with this, but particularly in the black community I feel we often undervalue ourselves on our resumes. Too often we sell our skill sets short and do not properly value what we do. For instance, if we do not do something solely by ourselves we feel we shouldn’t list it. But, if you were a part of a big project or task, you can indeed list those skills on your resume. Your company may not be where you want it to be now, but that does not make less valuable nor does it take away from the work and progress.

It is very important that we value both ourselves and the work we do. If you do not respect and value the work that you do, do not expect anyone else to do so either. As we excel to new levels and aspire to grow, many times the unknown causes us to lack confidence. Therefore, we must first sell ourselves before we can sell anyone else. Once you realized that you are worthy, then you are able to stand firmly with confidence! Your self-confidence allows you to sell yourself properly and helps you to realize all that you have done and accomplished in your career.

In order to gain that confidence:

1. See yourself as a Brand!

a. Use your resume to tell your story and brand your unique God given ability

2. Surround yourself with people who encourage you and who provide you with positive feedback

3. Holding conversations with others about your goals and the work you do can be of great benefit. Networking is very beneficial.

I want to be best version of myself, and when I am able to help those close to me achieve their goals and aspirations it makes me better. I encourage you all to put yourself in the right circle, provide a positive impact, and help one another understand their self-worth and value. Remember, your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth. Take pride in your work, your jobs, your skill-sets, and most of all YOU ARE ENOUGH!
