The CEO and the founder of the private equity firm, Vista Equity Partners, Robert F Smith, significantly rose up the Forbeslist of the richest Americans in 2017. He was ranked 226thin the US and was considered by the magazine as one of the most prominent business personalities. Recently according to Forbes, Smith has even surpassed Oprah Winfrey and has now become the richest African-American on the list. A stubborn person who was curious about the workings of transistors and then becoming one of the most successful and well-known investors in the world, Robert F. Smith is someone worth knowing.

Early Stints And The Road To Success

Smith attended Gove Jr. High School in Denver where he was on the top of the class especially in mathematics and computer science. His first venture was in Bell Labs which was known for its expertise in electrical components. The company only offered internships for upper-level college students, but this still didn’t stop Robert from applying. His persistence and self-belief bought him a position in the research company when an MIT student failed to turn up, and he worked there on his summer and winter breaks for the next four years.

After completing a Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University, Smith started working as an engineer for Air Products and Chemicals, Kraft General Foods and Goodyear. He changed his career path, building interest in business and finances. He completed his MBA from Columbia University in 1994 where he started his journey to become one of the greatest minds in the business.

After joining Goldman Sachs in mergers and acquisitions in 1994, he was promoted to the position of co-heading the enterprise systems and storage. He opened an office in the Silicon Valley in 1997 with Goldman Sachs. This successful stint comprised of completing and counseling $50 billion worth of activities with big tech giants such as Apple, Microsoft, and Yahoo.

Vista Equity Partners

Mr. Robert F. Smith is currently known as the chairperson, founder and the CEO of the company, established in 2000. The company has a reputation of being one of the top performing buyout fund operators in the US. The methodology which he described as ‘a way of doing things differently’ is a prime example for any entrepreneur or a business minded person to go all out in their respective careers.

Before starting his firm with a compelling investment strategy — which consists of backing Silicon Valley’s least know tech organizations; he was considered barmy by his peers at Goldman Sachs from which he found the courage and determination to succeed in his venture. The founding of the company itself is a lesson to all the organizations aiming to make a benchmark for themselves.

Due to his success through a lot of hard work and self-belief, he has earned respect from the Wall Street Family. His trust in his company has led to large returns up to $6 billion in a single project which is a great achievement in his phenomenal career.

His philanthropy activities such as Project Realize are also something which has been a great source of admiration due to his passion for helping those in need. He has a stubborn personality when it comes to business — with a desire to prove on the big stage — both of which have led him to the top of the world. Robert F. Smith is shining example everybody, young and old should look up to.
